Is Obama Trying To Kill Dividend Investing? [View article]
Noob - Further down in this thread, I accused you of wanting to revert to the Gilded Age, and worse, the Social Darwinist thought of the educated Right Wing of the time. I apparently did not go far back enough. By your reasoning, you would have supported French aristocracy against "modernist" Enlightenment thought.
A defense of the Rich in the hope of becoming one, is the reasoning of an egotist. To support those policies, wrongheaded or not, because they are good for society, would be the approach of one interested in helping humanity.

Tew - FSLR collectors are not as efficient as other technologies. I could see the possibility of being given their collectors free, and still deciding they were not cost effective because of higher installation costs.
Imagine if your auto had the option of a gasoline engine, a more expensive diesel engine, or a free steam engine fueled by gasoline. You would eventually lose money taking the free steam engine because of its inefficiency. FSLR is facing this same dilemma. 50% drop?- Tell me why FSLR isn't going to 0. I personally never have had a position in FSLR and I don't know enough about it to confidently short it at this level.

Put yourself in the position of a mutual fund manager. CQB is a boring stock that has dropped. Better to get rid of it before the end of the next quarter. Window dressing is so much easier than explaining your errors.
I am short Aug $8 puts. Because of window dressing, I doubt that Chiquita will rise before the end of June. Barring further news, I expect to roll my puts or accept assignment of the stock. At these prices, I think it will rise - eventually.

Economic analyst - To be "progressive" in that era meant being racist, with science backing you all the way. I have often argued that Hitler would have come to the same conclusions had his scientific sources been exclusively British, French, American or, sorry to say, Canadian. I had known that Wilson was a bright and knowledgeable racist. I had not known how much Teddy Roosevelt was so "well-informed".
I have read some of Stephen Jay Gould's writings that debunked that era's scientific misadventures. Thank you for bringing up another example of demonstrating how some of the very best products of our advanced modern scientific western civilization could have been so wrong.
To Buckoux - This means we should all remain wary faced with those who would tell us TRUTH. It does not mean that Bishop Usher was right, or that climate change is a conspiracy.

Blueline - I have been sorely tempted to purchase Fox News for its entertainment value. I already get left wing RT tv free, which is Left sorta, since it's anti U.S. Right.
I try to not act immorally. I too often fail, but I have not yet suscribed to Fox News. To support anything Murdochlike, (the creation of news for an ulterior motive) I see as acting immorally. Fox, from what I can gather here, has first rights to a blossoming story. The attempt is similar to the "Is Obama American" - sorry -- "Obama is not American" story where Obama eventually had to produce a long form birth certificate. Obama gained nothing, Fox got noteriety, and "real news", of the Edward R. Morrow, Walter Cronkite mold, was left out in the cold. The only positive I can fathom from the birther controversy was Donald Trump being displayed to all for what he really is.
We are "discussing" this "news". Fox has won, no matter the outcome. The Obama haters will have one more reason to hate him. Rational people will eventually do what they did in the "birther" situation ie., relegate the "issue" to irrelevance.
We are not even there yet. We are asking Obama to deny the ridiculous. Fox accuses him of bragging about Ben Laden's death and preparing blame should it not have worked. Even were Obama to produce "proof" of the later, you can be sure that Fox would display this as more self-aggrandisement.
In face of folly, the best course would seem to be not dignifying this assertion with any response. But that is what did not work in the birther situation. FOX HAS WON. They have outdone Goebbels.

James - What's happening ? I "liked" your comment. I emphatically agree except for your last point. If they, the "slice and dice " bankers, who made money for their banks and themselves, but in so doing, screwed their clients and their country's economy should be relegated to the unemployed - certainly not. Capitalism, in its present form seems to dictate that profit is everything. Coillateral ( how did that Freudian i get in there) damage doesn't count. These are great capitalists, who will do anything for a profit. What more could a "real" capitalist employer want? They have been willing to screw their country - no, the world. They have proven their mettle. Hire them!
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [View article]
James - That question becomes valid only if we compare with what is unknowable - What would have happened if the government had not acted at all? I would argue that the Lehman debacle gives us some insight. But we'll never really know.

Macro and cheese - I take your points. And yet, the image of an austere country (financially) comes from the supposed lessons learned from hyperinflation during the Weimar Republic, and its political aftermath. And yet, Germany was willing to "invest" in its collective self by bringing the former DDR up to snuff. There are instances when Germany acts un-German.
Perhaps the Mediterranean profligacy turns them off, as compared to innocence of the DDR. Perhaps it was a one-off, had to do situation. (I think a unified Korea would be shown similar consideration by South Korea).
European countries are convinced of the necessity to remain economically and even politically intertwined. Europeans know their history. The Euro could be sacrificed, but a Euro for productive countries only, or a new Deutschmark, would damage if not destroy exports.
Politically, Europe is much as the U.S. would be if still under the Articles of Confederation. As such, no country can dictate. But a powerful country can prevent. Though Germany may continue to prefer austerity, it might do less to a) prevent flexibility by the European Central Bank, and b) bending of the fiscal rules by countries, such as France, so inclined in going that route.
I agree with your prediction on the Euro. Stalemate and ensuing panic would see the US$ rise as the safe haven currency. Financial flexibility should mean a lower Euro for fear of future inflation.

Jhooper - If you wish to refute a broad argument with an exception to the general rule, choose your exception well. You are probably right about the Quakers in Pennsylvania, though I must plead ignorance on the details. However, British rule attempted to stop colonialist expansion in Indian territories. They wished to trade with the Indians. The colonists wanted the land.
The atrocities of the Pequot War of the 1630's should be sufficient to discredit the idea that "things got ugly" only because of a European "desire to regulate and tax trade". It certainly refutes Tom's contention , based on 20th century examples , that ethnic cleansing was a European invention.
Yet Another One For The Materialists? [View article]
Tom f75 - Ethnic cleansing - a European invention? From the time of the Pilgrims through the Trail of Tears, etc., the U.S. and many of its predecessor colonies were involved in ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing is a European invention only if you want to go back to the Cro- Magnons doing in the Neanderthals.
Francois Hollande has defeated Nicolas Sarkozy by a comfortable margin in the race for the French Presidency, reports Bloomberg, citing exit polls. It will put the Socialist party in power for the first time in 2 decades. Sarkozy's defeat makes him the 11th EU leader tossed from power since the sovereign debt crisis began. [View news story]
Madav - If I cannot defer to your reasoning, or lack thereof, you would have me demur to your better eyesight and to your superior intellect? Those who see in black and white with no nuances accepted, label themselves as well as the quality of their arguments.

Macro and Cheese - And yet, Germany has lived the example of reintegrating backward East Germany. Did it go that badly? Is it that sacrifice can be accepted more easily for one of your own ethnicity? Is it simply that Merkel and the Christian Democrats are one election away from having their policies reversed? (Why am I thinking of our Conservatives in Canada?)

Madav1138 - When someone looks at the Left from the vantage point of the Far Right, it is perhaps understandable that he should confuse Social Democrat, Socialist, and Communist. This is an example of seeing the forest, and not identifying the trees.
Let me further confuse you by admitting that my late aunt was a Communist. But, she was not a materialist, determinist Marxist. She was a Roman Catholic nun. She too would have been placed in that faraway forest on the Left, at least in her economic practices.

Datadave - It's not that the Emperor has no clothes. It's just that we couldn't, and still can't , identify them. My B.A. is also in Political Science, and far from Chapel Hill.
I generally agree with your later comment as to the kind of crisis in which we find ourselves today. I am not a product of the University of Chicago, and I would wager that you are not either.

Chancer - Depending on your point of view, you can laud or ridicule Hollande's policies. But isn't it consistent with his logic that he would think that higher taxes would lead to the possibility of a balanced budget. Why is it necessary to find "contradictions" and deception in what I am sure you find to be delusional plans. If all of France's millionaires move to Monaco, you will be able to gloat at his failure in balancing the French budget. But does that mean it was a promise he did "not intend to keep"?
France and Germany will work together. They will do so financially for reasons having nothing to do with finance. I have not yet visited Germany. But, in every tiny French village, there is a monument listing the fallen of World War I. Both France and later Germany suffered horrendous defeats in World War II. At worst, the Euro may not survive. The European Union has to survive, and Europeans know it.
