  • 3 Factors That Will Help Gold Glitter In 2012 [View article]
Seasonality is only mildly positive. India is actually bearish as the gov is trying to fight inflation by lowering imports and gold demand. And jewelry is not the main driver for gold, government buying is, mainly China recently. We will see if China continues to stockpile gold. If so, any further weakness will be a great buying point. If not gold will not hit the prior 1,850ish highs for years to come.

  • Interview With Marc Faber: Gold Still Best Portfolio Antidote For Excessive Debt [View article]
25% in Asian properties? Great invest in another bubble like property market. As for gold, some is always good, but 25% is a bit much. If it really comes down to gold, having a little is good enough. Asides from government ownership and individuals with a few gold coins, almost no one has any.

  • Death Of The Gold Bull Market? [View article]
This is all nice and certainly gold loses its luster to stocks in a stock bull, however, the key factor is actually government buying when it comes down to gold's run up. With the US using their reserve currency status to sanction and wage economic war with those it doesn't like (for good reason usually) and with the US wallowing in too much debt and engaging in QE, it is only natural for other countries to look at gold as another asset class to diversify from US Treasuries.

Given short term US Treasuries pay little more than gold (0%) these days and most governments have wised up to not buy long dated US Treasuries the allure of gold and the reason for the run up is understandable. So until governments feel safe enough to just own US Treasuries again (since other fiat currencies are often even more unsafe than US dollars) gold will probably continue to remain firm.

  • The Problem Of Fake Gold Bars [View article]
Last I heard they forge salted gold bars with heavy dense elements like lead where it is very hard to figure out if its real. As for fake ones, I would start by looking at government gold storage claims. Governments have had a rich history about lying about their precious metals hordes. So much so, it caused depressions because currencies were backed by gold that didn't exist.

  • The Why And How Of Adding Gold To Your Portfolio With ETFs [View article]
You need commodity exposure to counter QE, inflation, or monetary misbehavior but gold isn't the only or best option. It is the safest in the fact you could sell gold anytime and practically anywhere even if the gears fall off of the civilized world. In such a case I'd prefer food and a bunker though.

  • Did China's Central Bank Buy 139 Tonnes Of Gold In The Fourth Quarter? [View article]
Even if they have it it is speculated that the US lends out to short paper speculators so much gold that if it was to hit the roof and mass delivery was forced it could be cleaned out of a large amount of that hoard even if it had all 8000 tons. The simple fact is the US Congress and others should bar the US from lending out its precious metals to speculators, especially if they are not AAA rated or the US risks losing its vast assets helping others to gamble for little to no gain.

  • Did China's Central Bank Buy 139 Tonnes Of Gold In The Fourth Quarter? [View article]
China's goal to acquire gold as a backstop makes sense. It was a means of funding for them when they took over China. At that time they couldn't really get funding by other means which goes to prove that the yellow stuff's value tends to endure much longer than any currency. That's why Germany and Italy refuse to give any of it up no matter what happens in Europe.

  • No More Safe Havens Left? [View article]
There simply is not enough precious metals even with massive paper issues for pension funds, mutual funds, etc to hold a significant offsetting amount to counter other market risk. If they were to do so they'd run it up to ridiculous levels. Likewise, the risk of default on paper precious metals isn't necessarily any safer than any other paper product. If say JP Morgan goes down it will default on its precious metals shorts before it people depositing money in the bank get shafted.

In the end, precious metals need to be cleared as tier one capital to make them more safe than currency or other investments and if they could be insured by FDIC or other bank insurance that would make them glitter even brighter. In the meantime gold is a good out of control inflation hedge or end of the world holding. But, really one should not be betting on either scenario.

Precious metals should rise moderately to the increase in fiat currency. So far that has been good for holders after Clinton because both parties seem to have forgotten that there is something called a Federal Budget and could care less about keeping spending in check. To them money is free. They make more, give it to friends and destroy the value of those who have it in the process.

  • All The Gold Bugs In China [View article]
Now is a great time for China to move into precious metals. With the US Federal Reserve supporting ridiculous US Treasury prices and yields and the dollar strong because of Euro woes it enables them to unwind their position and stick the giant over minting of US dollars back to the US where eventually the US citizens will have to pay for the US governments and Federal Reserve's extraordinarily bad handling of money (ergo spending and printing like mad men).

Although gold itself is not in short supply, the big issue is fiat currency and not gold itself.

  • Why Has Gold Been Down? [View article]
I would not say gold is the #1 asset protector, but certainly it is protection against dollar devaluation of it ever occurs. The weakness in gold is mainly due to the rise in the dollar because of the Euro meltdown. Gold is almost treated as a currency these days that acts in reverse to dollar strength or weakness.

Cramer has been hyping gold for years now. There is not much different than a few years ago in that respects. As for a bubble, there is no bubble until it goes past enthusiasm. Perhaps the author is calling both for a bubble and then a collapse in advance.

Nice reference to history. You may also note that Nero, one of the most infamous rulers of Rome was the first to debase the silver coins with other metal inside. If I recall correctly Nixon is the one to debase our silver standard by abolishing it.

  • Why Precious Metals And U.S. Treasuries Aren't Good Bets Against The Current Uncertainty [View article]
Just shorting the market or buying puts in what you already have if you have exposure to the market already is just an expensive way of selling. If you want such protection just sell the portion you are overexposed. As for investment, lambasting precious metals seems a bit weak given they are one of the best performing sectors in this nightmarish economic meltdown. Goldbugs get an A+ for riding gold up this far. If you want to call them wrong call sovereign wealth funds and governments wrong as well because they have been big buyers recently.

  • Gold ETFs Down Big In Wednesday Action [View article]
Gold is very volatile as expected around here. It is not bullish or bearish but great for traders. I expect gold to go over 2,000 and potentially drop another 50 (already went down). The trading range may keep widening encompassing 1750 to 2,100 or so. If you are chicken get out. Of course, getting into anything else may be even more risky, especially stocks.
